Stroke Rehabilitation – A Brief

If you or a loved one has suffered a stroke, stroke rehabilitation can help restore function and independence. This comprehensive, long-term process usually begins in the hospital but continues either at home or at a community clinic.

Stroke Rehabilitation

A person’s rehabilitation plan is tailored to their disability and prospects for improvement. It may involve working with a team of medical specialists, such as physicians, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, rehabilitation nurses, or case managers.

Your rehabilitation plan will be tailored to the size, location, and severity of your stroke. Additionally, it should take into account any family needs or preferences that might exist.

Physical therapy exercises, for instance, can help build muscle strength in the affected limbs. You’ll also be taught how to utilize various walking aids such as canes and walkers.

In some cases, your therapist might suggest constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) to strengthen a weak or paralyzed limb. With this technique, you would wear either a mitten or sling that restricts the use of your strong arm so you can practice moving the weaker one.
